Let me take this opportunity to wish everyone a belated merry Christmas and a presperous new year 2011. I hope that you are taking this time to relax and prepare yourself for the new year. Personally I have been reading and learning new concepts about WordPress and SEO. Today I would like to share with you about something new that I learnt in a matter of minutes. The top is how to upgrate WordPress from version 2.0.x to latest version e.g. 2.7+ etc.
It is very simple and can be accomplished in a matter of minutes! As always, you need to check whether your web server meets the minimum requirements namely SQL and PHP versions. Next you should back up your old blog. Please use Cpanel to back up your blog (Files/Backup). Second, back up your database. While still logged in to your CPanel, dont forget to take this opportunity to back up your database (Databases/phpMyAdmin).When you are finished with the cpanel, please log in to your WP Admin panel to disable plugins. To disable the plugins just go to your dashboard and you can easily see the page manage plugins. Here you need to change the “Bulk Actions” pull down menu to “Deactivate” and click “Apply”.
Now you are ready to carry out the update!!! There are 3 methods:
1. Automatic update
Here it is simple – you just need to launch the automatic update by clicking on the “update banner” on the version. You will see inside the WP admin panel / Dashboard. You may also go to Tools > Upgrate to then click on “upgrate” and bingo you are ready to go! Once you are on the “Update WordPress” page, click the button “Update Automatically” to start the process off. You shouldn’t need to do anything else and, once it’s finished, you will be up-to-date.
2. Manual update
First delete the following wordpress files: Wp-includes and wp-admin
Second DO NOT delete the following files: wp-config.php, wp-content (except wp-content/cache, wp-content/plugins/widgets), images folder, .htaccess, robots.txt, wp-includes/languages.
If you can follow instructions and have observed the steps above, then we can proceed to the next stage. Get the latest WordPress zip (or tar.gz) file. Unpack the zip file that you download. Delete the old wp-includes
and wp-admin
directories on your web host (through your FTP or shell access). For ftp client, I would recommend File Zilla. Using FTP client or shell access, upload the new WordPress files to your web host, overwriting old files e.g. index.php, register.php etc. You are ready to go and next you need to visit your main WordPress admin page at /wp-admin. If a database upgrade is necessary at this point, WordPress will detect it. Click on “Continue”.
Congratulations you have upgraded your blog from the lower WordPress version such as 2.1.8 to the latest one like 3.0.10. You can now go out and play golf!! Have a great week and year 2011 ahead!!
