I personally suggest you provide access to the directory the developer will need to do his/her job.

Hi, hey question, if I am setting up a seperate FTP password or client or whatever you call it for a 3rd party developer, do I want the path to be ‘/’ or do I want to somehow limit that access that he needs to develop my site?
