Site redesigns are difficult things. They give us the opportunity to look at our work and go over what we have done wrong and what we have done correctly and sometimes what we see is painful.

Unfortunately, to move on with our work often requires two things. You must be brutal and you can’t have any sentimentality. The pieces that make up your web site have to be evaluated on a logical basis, based on fact not on what you would like or desire.

It can be a difficult process. I have had several things I had wanted done for Web Host Magazine’s redesign but ended up having to let them go based on their merits and potentials balanced with the effort put in to achieve them. In that light, its not so much a complete end to those ideas but a postponement. Some ideas I have had however, were seriously wanting and were completely removed.

At first I was kicking and screaming so that I would not have to relinquish those ideas. But as I thought about it, just because an idea seems good doesn’t make it so. Also some ideas may lend themselves quite well to a particular style… but not your site’s style. Making tough decisions is part of redesigning a website.

There are a lot of fine things to say about being sentimental. But when it comes to redesigning your web site, none of those fine things will help.
