This should be PHP vs Ruby :p

  2. vortex3k Says:

why not comparing RoR against a PHP framework like Yii which does all the CRUD stuff, DB abstraction etc.?

Comparing RoR vs plain PHP is like comparing a SQL db against plain text data stores.

I really like RoR, don’t get it wrong. But why do the ruby people always compare the framework, without their language would not be as good as it is, against plain languages??

  3. ooops1234 Says:

I’m php fanatic. I love it and programming in it from last 4 years. I want to learn ROR but never give it a try as I again fall in love with php every time if i try. But I always watch these videos I love the way they make these ads and make me laugh. 🙂 Don’t oppose on them.

  4. TaiChiArtist Says:

Some guy just put this comment out – I cannot believe what I saw here :
“Yes, Rails is a framework. But, since Ruby by default isn’t a web-language, like I set previously”

    Like I “set” previously ? WTF ????

  5. YTSparty Says:

LOL, SQL is so difficult. Thank god you avoid it in RoR. Thank god it’s all hidden and in some monolithic framework that basically decides for you what you want to do. I can see why people that like RoR hate C/C++. You actually have to be smart and understand the details to write in C/C++. Who needs that? Just crank out a pre-fab website with RoR. Isn’t that how garbage collection became such a problem??

  6. WebDevFTW Says:

@pHybian Yes, Rails is a framework. But, since Ruby by default isn’t a web-language, like I set previously, Rails should be compared to web-languages and not web-language frameworks. Rails should be compared to pure PHP or ASP. It’s a fair battle.

  7. pHybian Says:

@WebDevFTW no, no it’s not. It’s a framework. You can’t spin shit just to make it fit your own thoughts. Rails is a framework, not a god damn language. imo – they would have done better to compare with spring, or cake, or something.

  8. nowzadick Says:

@torment3d dude, languages do not die, plus the amount of project written on PHP is so high that they will always need PHP developers to maintain them.

  9. nowzadick Says:

    @sdefranc haha, you rock!

  10. nowzadick Says:

    FuelPHP has Migrations!!!!

  11. thedeadbaby Says:

Yes. I agree Ruby on Rails is a toy to be picked up at Toys ‘r Us.

  12. kurrator1 Says:

Thet truth is that PHP frameworks SUCK!

  13. sdefranc Says:

Pfft I code my websites using bash

  14. XxLightning12Nik Says:

Very original. Shit like DOS core!
    You shoud study IT!!

  15. TheYouHub Says:

lol php is one of the best programming languages out there, while your Ruby will suck on the speed php is just unstoppable, btw, how can you build websites, if you don’t know what is programming language and what is framework? Note for Mr. Greg Pollack – Ruby is programming language, Rails is framework

  16. samiwistler Says:

    Cool vid, thanks

  17. WebDevFTW Says:

@traquino Yeah, but Rails is kinda it’s own language since Rails by default isn’t a web-language. So, I guess if they made an desktop-based version of PHP, then you could compare that framework to Ruby itself. So no, Rails is a web-based language derived from Ruby.

  18. pankaj66866 Says:

    @pankaj66866 🙂 Yes finally …

  19. torment3d Says:

@pankaj66866 ah good point, I misunderstood you. I agree – fastest time to market is probably the best solution, especially from a business sense. Good discussion 🙂

  20. pankaj66866 Says:

@torment3d Wooo … Rails is Opinionated software … although i love rails but that is the truth.
On the other hand Zend is loosely coupled software and is not opinionated because there are no best practices for using it.
Personally i think that if there are N possible ways of doing something and n/N has favorable outcome in terms of best practices you can select any of the n/N combinations but eventually you can only use one that is, n-(n/N-1) so just focus on one for greater speed.

  21. torment3d Says:

@pankaj66866 I don’t think it’s opinionated at all, but rather how widely used it will be. The more widely used something will be, then I believe the more loosely coupled it should be, because otherwise you’re tying people down to a certain way of doing things. However, internal tools, proprietary systems.etc -> I see no problem with it being tightly coupled.

  22. pankaj66866 Says:

@torment3d Hmmmm …. Well That Brings us to the point in discussion about opinionated software … wheather loose coupling is better or tight coupling …?

  23. torment3d Says:

@SonyFan1260 er… wtf. Rails can do all that. Also, comparing a LANGUAGE with a FRAMEWORK is stupid.

PS – PHP will not live forever. It is starting to show its age. Has been for a few years, actually.

  24. torment3d Says:

@pankaj66866 you’re right, Zend isn’t a framework. It’s a library. But that doesn’t mean it sucks. It’s actually very good in some respects because it’s so loosely coupled. Rails 3 attempts to do this, but still doesn’t do it all that well.

CakePHP sucks, I absolutely hate working with it. I love Rails, but saying other frameworks sucks because it doesn’t have this or that, is not a good comparison. Rails is built for some things, Zend built for others.

  25. pankaj66866 Says:

@torment3d Also the syntactic sugar of ruby or rails cant be compared with any … php by desing itself is like C and does not support syntactic sugar like Ruby does …
