Happy Fall! I for one welcome the change in weather!
We post a State of Site5 update once a month to let our current and future customers hear about what we’re working on and give a behind-the-scenes glimpse into our company.
SiteAdmin 2.0 is coming together very nicely! While we were hoping for the initial release by the end of September, we simply were not able to hit that target. There are so many pieces involved in this undertaking, and we need to ensure 100% functionality prior to launching. We would hate for there to be issues with it which could affect our customer’s ability to effectively manage their hosting accounts.
At this time, we’re shooting for a mid-October release, and we’re very optimistic that we’ll be able to meet that target.
Our first beta tests of PHP 5.3 have begun! Volunteers are already testing this for us so that it can be used in real-world applications by the people that know them best. Once beta testing is complete, we will roll this out to our entire fleet.
Support will be opt-in to ensure currently-installed applications remain unaffected. So if your application doesn’t support PHP 5.3, you won’t have any problems! More information about utilization will be posted once it is installed fleet-wide.
We’ve fielded a lot of questions about when we’ll be supporting Rails 3. We’re hesitant to do so because doing so would cause all unfrozen apps to utilize Rails 3 and could potentially break production apps. With that in mind though, it is possible for customers to install Rails 3 within their own home directory so that their apps can use it.
Surprisingly though, documentation on this is extremely difficult to find, so we have created a tutorial that takes you all the way from installing Rails 3, Bundler, and configuring Phusion Passenger to setting up a sample app.
